Style over substance

Do you prefer the idea of Lyle Lovett or Milli Vanilli? Howard Stern or the Jonas Brothers?

"In the age of television, image becomes more important than substance." - S. I. Hayakawa

It comes down to do you want someone who looks the part or who actually does the job? This is part of the decline of western civilization, not the sole reason, but one of the reasons. Do you like your musicians with talent or with looks and lip syncing?

"We must get the American public to look past the glitter, beyond the showmanship, to the reality, the hard substance of things. And we'll do it not so much with speeches that will bring people to their feet as with speeches that bring people to their senses." - Mario Cuomo

The BDSM community is but a microcosm of the greater society, and within it we have the same issues, the same great abilities and the same human failings. What are we as a community to do to correct the issues within our community?

We have each seen the issues and shrugged our shoulders, wrung our hands, complained about it causing problems, but no one stands up to fix things, and the cycle goes ever onward.

What can we as a community do to correct the problems of style over substance, the drama llamas, the shift to more casual play, etc, etc?

"Don't settle for style. Succeed in substance." - Wynton Marsalis
