Gossip & Rumors

"Who gossips with you will gossip of you" - Irish Saying

Seems everyday I log on and get messages and offlines from people detailing all the goings on of the previous day, from what is going on with work, to what so and so said in the room late last night. Sometimes it is said with malice, when someone is jealous, and sometimes it is said innocently, simply from ignorance of how rumors spread and what kind of damage gossip does.

"He gossips habitually; he lacks the common wisdom to keep still that deadly enemy of man, his own tongue" - Mark Twain

I tend to discount what is told to me that is not first hand knowledge, and I know the danger of perspective, ask three people what happened, get three different stories, all the truth, and all wrong. But people continue to tell me things, perhaps because they know I will keep my mouth shut about sources and really the extent of what I know.

"No one gossips about other people's secret virtues." - Bertrand Russell

We should all endeavor to not repeat anything we do not know for sure, even I am guilty of it at times, but some take this to an art form as often as they do it. In repeating rumors, we hurt other people, and that is not a good thing.

"Live that you wouldn't be ashamed to sell the family parrot to the town gossip." - Will Rogers

But people also need to remember, what is said in a public chat room, no matter who you think is around, is public record, I know how and others do as well to watch the rooms without really appearing in the room list. Even private IMs or e-mails are not safe if the person you speak to is willing to share that information.

"In our appetite for gossip, we tend to gobble down everything before us, only to find, too late, that it is our ideals we have consumed, and we have not been enlarged by the feasts but only diminished" - Pico Iyer
