Being Controversial

Controversial is defined as "to give rise to, or be likely to give rise to public disagreement".

Well, that sounds like a lot of my writings and comments. Sometimes I play devils advocate, but generally what I say is what I know or what I believe, and generally do not care much if it is the popular view or not.

"Controversy is only dreaded by the advocates of error" - Benjamin Rush

A lively discussion is healthy, so long as people do not take it to heart and let it hurt their feelings that others have different views than they do, people who seek to just shut a controversy up are seeking to cover up other people's opinions, and that is not healthy in the slightest.

"A civilization in which there is not a continuous controversy about important issues is on the way to totalitarianism and death" - Robert Maynard Hutchins

OK, now to drag this around to the lifestyle, too often we let the "popular" people lead what is said and what the views are, there are wrong ways to do things, and multiple right ways as well, while "take what you want, ignore the rest" sounds good at first glance, it really fails in the long haul, the experienced people are doing a disservice to the new people by not helping them keep from making the same mistakes that hurt us the first time around.

"Moral cowardice that keeps us from speaking our minds is as dangerous to this country as irresponsible talk. The right way is not always the popular and easy way. Standing for right when it is unpopular is a true test of moral character." - Margaret Chase Smith
