Age of consent

"Maturity is often more absurd than youth and very frequently is most unjust to youth" - Thomas Alva Edison

This number varies from location to location, and time to time. Originally in many places it was age 12, then up to 14, then 16, then 18, then 21, then back down to 18, and in some cases back down to 16 or 14 even. Right now withing the US, the age of consent is anywhere from 14 to 18 depending on your location.

Drinking is still tied to that magic 21 number implemented in 1984, prior to this date, each state set their own drinking age. Why was it set to 21? To reduce drunk driving accidents, 5% of the driving is done by people under 21, so eliminating drinking for them reduces drunk driving by 5%, or so the theory went. Lots of luck getting real numbers for this one, lots of screwed up statistics out there.

"Maturity is a bitter disappointment for which no remedy exists, unless laughter can be said to remedy anything." - Kurt Vonnegut, Jr.

What does this have to do with the lifestyle? Well what age should the lifestyle groups reach out to or allow in? The oldest group in the United States, TES, requires an age of 19 to join, Janus the 2nd oldest allows anyone legally an adult, which would be 18, since they are located in California. The age tends to be 18 or 19 over much of the country, except in the southeast where most groups require age 21 to join.

What effect does this have? It tends to create more isolated groups, the 18, 19 and 20 year olds, while legally adults are relegated to the fringe of the lifestyle, where the predators tend to hang out, leaving them with no one to educate them or keep them safe. Welcome to the bible belt, where we will dictate morals and judge you, even if we are in a lifestyle frowned upon by some people.

"Maturity has more to do with what types of experiences you've had, and what you've learned from them, and less to do with how many birthdays you've celebrated."
